Representatives of the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights supported earlier today the Campaign "Unwanted", an initiative focused exclusively on the problem of selective abortion as a drastic example of gender discrimination, with full respect for reproductive, legally guaranteed women's rights.
The campaign was launched by the NGO Center for Women's Rights in cooperation with the McCann Agency and it urges citizens and relevant institutions to react to such a serious problem and change patriarchal attitudes about women and men in Montenegro and to sign a petition with the goal of preventing the abuse of early prenatal tests for the purpose of selective termination of pregnancy.
According to the Statistical Office of Montenegro, 109 boys in the last twenty years average 100 births annually. Only in 2009, 113 boys were born, compared to 100 girls. According to the findings of the United Nations Population Fund from 2012, Montenegro, along with Albania, Azerbaijan and Armenia, is placed at the very top on the list of countries with the largest imbalance between male and female sex.
It is a deep-rooted discrimination that begins before birth and manifests itself through the unequal position of girls and women in all areas of life. The consequences of this problem are not only demographic - they can have serious social implications, such as the rise of violence, organized crime, conflicts. It was reiterated that Montenegro faces a major social problem of prenatal sex selection, which has already seriously damaged the natural relationship of newborn boys and girls. In Montenegro already three thousand women in reproductive age are already missing, and projections are that in less than 20 years, there will be 8,000 women in Montenegro less than men will be. Pejovic, in her statement to the media, emphasized the support of the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights campaigns that targeted the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women and girls. The UN CEDAW Committee also recognized the importance of this problem and issued a legally binding recommendation to Montenegro to approach its resolution.
