Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović participated today in the Conference on Responsibility of States, Institutions and Individuals in the Fight against Anti-Semitism and Anti-Semitic Hate Crimes in the OSCE Area, held in Rome. Director General for relations with Religious Communities Ms. Žana Filipović, Ministry for Human and Minority Rights also attended the conference.
During his address, Minister Darmanović said that it is of particular importance that Italy, at the beginning of its OSCE chairmanship, raised issues of racism, xenophobia, discrimination and intolerance, bearing in mind that these challenges are of vital importance for everyday life of an individual. In this context, he said that the world is facing many challenges today and to avoid repetition of past mistakes, we need to strengthen the role of institutions influencing collective consciousness, with particular emphasis on educational institutions, the media, as well as responsible access to social network regulation.
He reiterated Montenegro's strong commitment to continue to contribute to the preservation of valuable cultural, religious and historical heritage.
Minister Darmanović pointed out that all Montenegrin institutions are continuously working to improve democratic values and recalled that the foundation stone for the construction of the new synagogue in Podgorica was laid down recently. It will be the first newly built synagogue in the Balkans and the largest synagogue built in the 21st century.
The role of the OSCE and the Chairperson in solving racism, xenophobia, discrimination and intolerance issues is more than significant and I congratulate Italy on the fact that this important issue has returned to the agenda of the OSCE, whereby Montenegro will remain a reliable partner , Darmanović concluded.
