Cairo: Women in the Sustainable Development

A ministerial conference on strengthening the role of women in the Euro-Mediterranean society was officially opened last night in Cairo, the Arab Republic of Egypt, with a reception organized for representatives of the member states of the Union for the Mediterranean.
Minister for Human and Minority Rights Mehmed Zenka said that the state of Montenegro recognized the need to strengthen the qualitative and quantitative participation of women in public life, the sphere of their economic empowerment, and the fight against violence against women and domestic violence. He stressed that the clear necessity of transforming social norms and attitudes in order to ensure gender equality and that the Member States of the Union for the Mediterranean in that context have a primary responsibility for raising the awareness of their citizens in order to help eliminate gender stereotypes and socio-cultural barriers to achieving gender equality.
The Minister reiterated that Montenegro has become the 29th member of the "Partnership for Equal Future" initiative, dedicated to the economic and political empowerment of women at the national and global level, which speaks of its recognizability in promoting its policies and projects in the field of gender equality.
Zenka told at the conference that the Government of Montenegro and the relevant institutions, through various legislative and institutional mechanisms for gender equality are making significant efforts to eliminate discrimination against women, and that in this direction the state of Montenegro undertakes general and special measures. He stated that the Montenegrin Law on Gender Equality from 2015 is fully in line with international standards, and that the realization ofrights contained in the provisions of other legal regulations and strategic documents for the integration of gender policies.
He expressed the hope that this initiative will launch a new energy and give a special impetus to strengthening the role of women not only in the Mediterranean countries, but will contribute to the achievement of the global goal of establishing full gender equality in the context of the Agenda for Sustainable Development by 2030.
At the Fourth Ministerial Conference organized by the Union for the Mediterranean, the European Commission and the Hashemite Republic of Jordan, it was noted that, despite positive developments regarding the participation of women in social, economic and political decision-making, obstacles to the full realization of their gardens still exist. The conference aimed to confirm the commitment to guaranteeing the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls and their full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms. The intention is to condemn all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls and to commit the states to undertake the necessary measures and policies to eliminate gender-based discrimination. 

Within the framework of the Conference, the Declaration on strengthening the role of women in the society was adopted, which in the forthcoming period will provide the necessary guidelines for improving the policy of achieving equal opportunities in the Euro-Mediterranean society and beyond.
