Demonstration exercise, earthquake and evacuation simulation was carried out today as part of the campaign "2019 Disaster Risk Reduction Days, Be Responsible - Reduce Risk", at the elementary school "Branko Božović" in Podgorica.

On this occasion, Minister without Portfolio and President of the Damage Assessment Commission Marija Vučinović said that today's exercise, carried out by the Directorate for Emergency Management, is another in a series of activities carried out as part of the ongoing campaign and the National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy.

"The activities carried out continuously by the Ministry of the Interior and the Directorate for Emergency Management are part of the National Strategy, which, among other things, involves the education of the youngest population, but also of all citizens in order to prevent and protect from potential disasters," Vučinović stressed.

"In cooperation with UNICEF, GIZ and the OSCE, we have implemented projects that focus precisely on elementary students and kindergarten children. We have also developed protection and rescue plans and carried out exercise at Centers for people with disabilities," the Minister said and added that such and similar activities of the Government and its partners will continue to be in focus in order to respond to all challenges in the best possible way.

Minister of the Interior Mevludin Nuhodžić said that Montenegro is an area with a potential earthquake risk, and that the system must constantly strengthen its capacity to respond to this and all other types of disasters.

"It is very important to know how to act in the event of an earthquake, as this can help reduce casualties. In this regard, we have organised this exercise today, which I believe was carried out very professionally, that the procedures followed by children and school employees and all participants in the system are clearly visible," Nuhodžić emphasised.

Minister Nuhodžić said that the exercise was carried out as part of the campaign marking International Day for Disaster Reduction, adding that it confirmed that the Ministry of the Interior is making significant efforts to increase citizens' safety in the event of natural and other disasters, as well as to improve the capacity and procedures in these situations.

"In 2013, the Government of Montenegro, in cooperation with the UNICEF Montenegro, established a cross-curricular programme in the field of disaster risk reduction for teacher education in primary and secondary schools in Montenegro," Director-General of the Directorate for Preschool and Elementary Education and Education of Persons with Special Educational Needs Arijana Nikolić – Vučinić pointed out.

According to Nikolić - Vučinić, about 200 teachers have been trained under the existing programme to further educate students on disaster risk reduction.
