NATO

Being part of the biggest collective security system represents a guarantee for our country in terms of national security, preserving sovereignty and territorial integrity. When it comes to geopolitics, as part of the Euro-Atlantic community, Montenegro has a possibility to proportionally take part in creating global security policies and decision making processes on the aims of common interest.

We will keep contributing to collective defence of the Alliance and to projecting stability beyond its borders in the forthcoming period, through participating in international operations and providing support to the partners.

On 5th June 2017, Montenegro became 29th member of the Alliance, and our membership to NATO represents the most relevant success of our country in modern history within the area of foreign policy. As our country recognized its perspective within collective security system, we became an important actor at the international scene, the one which contributes to implementation of key NATO policies such as deterrence and defence, projecting stability beyond the borders of the Alliance, fight against terrorism, tackling hybrid and cyber threats, as well as to the open door policy and NATO and EU cooperation. We significantly improved our defence cooperation with Allies, and our Armed Forces is working on developing its capabilities pursuant to NATO standards. Due to allied capacities, NATO membership also enabled us to have free protection of air space.

As a credible and reliable ally, Montenegro provides a concrete contribution to joint efforts of the Alliance in strengthening collective defence and preserving peace through deploying our members within Multinational battle group in Latvia as a part of NATO enhanced Forward Presence (eFP).

Our members are deployed to NATO mission in Kosovo, and this year we will have the first representative of Montenegro in NATO mission in Iraq. During previous period, we successfully completed our engagement in Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan, which lasted one decade.

Threats and challenges that we face today have a global dimension, which implies the importance of intensified transatlantic unity and cohesion. Montenegro remains dedicated to the system of collective security, through nurturing values of the Alliance, further investing in defence sector as well through strengthening defence capacities.
