PM Krivokapić, Ombudsman Bjeković: Tensions need to be calmed, while preserving fundamental civic principles

Calming tensions and normalising relations in society are currently key challenges and tasks for all who sincerely love and respect Montenegro, it was assessed at the meeting between Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapić and Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro Siniša Bjeković.

The two officials discussed the current events in Montenegro, exchanged information regarding the preconditions for the optimal functioning of the Protector's institution in the context of expanding the mandate, and expressed the need to intensify efforts to overcome open issues, which deeply divide the public and encourage a climate of intolerance and violence.

The Prime Minister informed the Protector about the measures taken to ensure stability, preserve public

and peace, and respect for the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens, expressing readiness to further encourage dialogue among all stakeholders, at all levels, in conditions of heated political passions.

PM Krivokapić pointed out that society needs more tolerance and kindness, especially from high-ranking persons in the political and cultural life of Montenegro.

"If we do not follow the path of dialogue and tolerance, we will end up in a situation where we do not deserve anyone's attention. We can very easily become victims of hatred and chauvinism, which is not the goal of any community. On the contrary!ʺ said Krivokapić.

The Prime Minister reminded Protector Bjeković that irresponsible individuals opened divisions for the first time, which did not exist even during the most difficult war events in the former Yugoslavia, and which is not Montenegrin tradition. Krivokapić emphasised that it is high time that all social subjects that directly and indirectly influence the social environment unite in the common interest, adding that "mere political one-upmanship leads to nothing."

Both sides agreed that the preservation of fundamental civic principles, such as good relations, respect for national, religious and ethnic differences and peculiarities, coexistence and tolerance - are inviolable values to which personal as well as institutional goals and ambitions must be subordinated. They emphasised the importance of taking responsibility for overcoming the accumulated problems and initiating positive changes with additional efforts and personal examples.

"The measure of patriotism is reflected in the level of realisation and respect for the rights and freedoms of all citizens, without distinction and without exception. We cannot afford the luxury of spoiling hard-won positions and the results of progress in Euro-Atlantic integration and the desired progress of the country due to daily political divisions," said Protector Bjeković.

He reminded of the numerous reactions of the institution regarding the tense events that endanger democratic values and the concept of the rule of law, pointing out once again the importance of conducting consultations with interested parties in the process of making important political decisions.
