The scope of the Ministry?

Ministry of Foreign Affairs is committed to achieving and protecting the interests and reputation of Montenegro globally. It assists Montenegrin citizens living and working abroad or travelling out of the country, as well as provides support to Montenegrin trade and others legal subjects at international level.

This sector of the Government coordinates activities for the implementation of foreign policy and strengthening the position in international relations, thus manages foreign activities directly and through Diplomatic and Consular Missions which include Embassies, Permanent Missions to international organizations, Consulates General and Consulates.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs represents Montenegro in relations with other countries, international organizations and institutions, as well as with their missions in Montenegro. In accordance with that, it performs diplomatic and consular activities and other professional assignments related to achieving political, economic, cultural and friendly ties. 

Our institution develops cooperation with emigrants from Montenegro and their organizations; acts on preservation of national and cultural identity; follows the development of regional and international relations, particularly in area of foreign and security policy.

Diplomats analyze the international position of Montenegro, contribute to strengthening our country’s position on global level, work on enhancement of bilateral relations with other countries, protect and promote economic interests of Montenegro abroad, analytically study and foresee events and processes in particular countries, international organizations and international relations as a whole, and report it to their country in a timely manner. 

The Ministry proposes foreign policy to the Government; recognition of states, establishment and termination of diplomatic and consular relations with other countries, along with appointment and recall of ambassadors. It also proposes to the Government membership, i.e. participation of Montenegro in international organizations, as well as other forms of multilateral cooperation.

In jurisdiction of our work is also preparation of bills, other regulations and general acts within the field of foreign affairs, then conclusion and implementation of international agreements. Ministry participates in affairs related to accreditation of official representatives of states and international organizations in Montenegro; subsequently in organization and realization of official and other international visits on state level, including international visits of delegations and members of Parliament. We also prepare participation of Montenegrin representatives in international negotiations and meetings.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is continuously working on professional training of diplomats, as well as on professionalization of diplomatic service, so that Montenegro has representatives who will portray its foreign policy priorities and interests on the best possible manner, on the world map.
