Construction of the Port of Bar
Symbolically, the foundation stone for the Port of Bar was laid at the seabed from the yacht "Rumija" in March 1905.
In 1926, the Montenegrin Ministry of Finance and the President of Barsko društvo (Association of Bar) signed an agreement for the construction and operation of the Free Port of Bar, including additional mooring facilities in Bar and the establishment of an adjoining Free Zone, along with the construction of a railway connecting Pristan to Skadar Lake, as well as the operation of motorized vessels on Skadar Lake.
During World War I, the Port of Bar suffered damage due to the torpedoing by Austrian warships, which left it disconnected from economic and trade routes.
In 1926, Barska plovidba (Maritime lines of Bar) was established in Bar, which used the Port of Bar as its main hub.
German divisions entered the Port in 1943 and, upon leaving in the spring of 1944, they destroyed the smaller port known as the "Old quay." After the end of World War II, the reconstruction of the Port commenced.
The railway route from Belgrade to Bar also played a significant role in shaping the future development of Bar and its port.
The first program for the construction of a modern port was approved in 1952, with construction starting the same year.
The Port of Bar was opened to international traffic in 1960, with the establishment of a border crossing and the Commission for Controlling International Passenger Traffic in Maritime Transport within the port.
A regular passenger line with Bari was established on 15 June 1965, and the first phase of port construction, with a capacity of 1.2 million tons of cargo transshipment, was completed the same year.
The construction of the second phase of the port began in 1971.
A major earthquake in 1979 damaged a significant portion of the port's capacities, especially those constructed in the first phase. Rehabilitation and reconstruction of the port facilities began in March 1981 and were completed two years later.
In February 1998, the Port of Bar was transformed into a joint-stock company, and the process of restructuring was finalized on 1 October 2009.
