Visa regime

Nationals of Montenegro are required to obtain a visa to enter Canada.Visa may be obtained from the Embassy of Canada in Vienna, the Republic of Austria.

Diplomatic relations

Canada recognized Montenegro on June 13, 2006. Diplomatic relations were established on September 5. The Ambassador of Canada to Montenegro, based in Belgrade, is Giles Norman (handed over the credentials on February 24, 2021). Montenegro covers Canada on a non-resident basis, through the Montenegrin Embassy in Washington (currently the embassy is at the level of charge d'affaires, until a new ambassador is appointed). The Consulate of Montenegro in Vancouver, headed by Honorary Consul Kare Foy, opened in July 2010, and the Consulate of Montenegro in Toronto, headed by Honorary Consul Roy Douglas Eliot, opened on June 8, 2017.

Relations between Montenegro and Canada are based on friendly principles with continuous deepening of cooperation and strategic partnership within NATO. The first bilateral consultations between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs were held in Podgorica on May 18, 2018. It is planned to hold bilateral political consultations in Canada in 2021.

Four associations of Montenegrin emigrants are active in Canada: the Montenegrin Cultural Society (Toronto), the Montenegrin Society of British Columbia (Vancouver), the Montenegrin Cultural Association "Bishop Danilo" (Toronto) and the Montenegrin-Canadian Association (Vancouver).

The Office for Canadian Visa Applications was opened in Podgorica on October 7, 2013. The Canadian Government, through the International Immigration Organization, has authorized the VSF Global office to receive applications for Canadian visas and passports in Podgorica, and the collected applications are sent to the Canadian Embassy in Vienna for processing.

Official visits

On April 7-12, 2014, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Dr. Igor Lukšić paid an official visit to Canada, where meetings were held with Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird, Chairman of the Canadian Parliamentary Delegation to NATO Cheryl Gallant, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Affairs and International Development of the Canadian Parliament Dean Ellison, Senator and Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development Raynell Andreychuk. This was the first official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro to Canada.

On September 7-9, 2013, the President of the Senate of Canada, Noel Kinsella, paid a visit to Montenegro. On that occasion, he had separate meetings with President Filip Vujanovic, Parliament Speaker Ranko Krivokapic and Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic.

Other meetings

On February 14, 2020, President Milo Đukanović met with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

On December 4, 2019, Prime Minister Dusko Markovic met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of the NATO Summit.

February 18, 2018 Minister of Foreign Affairs prof. Dr. Srdjan Darmanovic met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada Christia Freeland, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

On January 26, 2018, Prime Minister Dusko Markovic met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

On May 25, 2017, Prime Minister Dusko Markovic met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Brussels.

December 8, 2016 Minister of Foreign Affairs prof. Dr. Srdjan Darmanovic met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada Stefan Dion, on the sidelines of the 23rd session of the OSCE Ministerial Meeting in Hamburg.

On September 28, 2012, Foreign Minister Nebojsa Kaludjerovic met with Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

On September 19-21, 2012, the President of the Assembly Ranko Krivokapić met with the President of the Senate of Canada Noel Kinsel, at the European Conference of Speakers of the CoE Parliaments in Strasbourg.

Economic cooperation

In 2019, there was an increase in trade, compared to 2018, of 26.7% and it amounted to 1.9 mil. euros. Imports increased by 13.3% and amounted to 1.7 mil. euros, while exports also had a growth of as much as 185.7% and amounted to about 200 thousand euros. The deficit was 1.5 mil. euros.

In 2020, there was also an increase in trade between Montenegro and Canada, of as much as 73.7% compared to 2019 and it amounted to 3.3 mil. euros, of which imports amounted to 3.2 mil. euros.

In 2020, the main imported products from Canada are: aircraft, spacecraft and their parts (1.6 million euros), various food products (364.7 thousand euros), vegetables, roots and tubers for eating (266, EUR 3 thousand), vehicles (EUR 244.9 thousand) and optical, photographic, cinematographic and other apparatus (EUR 194.6 thousand).

In 2020, the main export products are beverages, alcohols and vinegar (98.4 thousand euros), followed by vegetables, roots and tubers (14.4 thousand euros) and various food products (3.4 thousand euros).
