The international recognition of Montenegro (Berlin Congress 1878) created the conditions for establishing diplomatic relations with the Vatican, and in 1886 a Concordat was signed with the Vatican, the first with an Orthodox state, while the Basic Agreement was signed in 2011.

Visa regime

Nationals of Montenegro may enter, pass through and stay in the Holy See for up to 90 days, with a valid travel document, without a visa.

Diplomatic relations

The Holy See officially recognized Montenegro on June 16, 2006, while diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in December 2006.

The President of Montenegro, Milo Đukanović, paid an official visit to the Holy See, on October 8, 2018.

The Secretary of State of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, paid his first official visit to Montenegro, 27-28. June 2018

Minister of Foreign Affairs prof. Dr. Srdjan Darmanovic paid an official visit to the Holy See, June 21, 2017.

Secretary for Relations with Other States of the Holy See Dominik Mamberti paid an official visit to Montenegro, 15-20. April 2010

The President of the Parliament of Montenegro Ranko Krivokapić paid an official visit to the Holy See on November 10, 2010.

Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic paid his first official visit to the Holy See on December 14, 2009.

Sovereign military order of Malta

Montenegro and the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta are achieving friendly cooperation further strengthened by contacts of high officials, and cooperation in the field of health and culture.

Diplomatic relations

The Order of Malta was officially recognized by Montenegro on June 30, 2006. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on September 5, 2006.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Montenegro to the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta, based in Rome, is Miodrag Vlahović (he took office on December 14, 2017).

The procedure for appointing a new ambassador of the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta in Montenegro is underway.
