Montenegro and the Republic of Turkey maintain traditionally friendly relations, with mutually expressed readiness for continuous development of overall bilateral cooperation.

Visa regime

Nationals of Montenegro may enter, pass through and stay in Turkey for up to 90 days, with a valid travel document, without a visa.

Nationals of Montenegro for entry into the Republic of Turkey must have a passport which is valid for at least 60 days longer than the expiry date of the visa or the visa exemption period. 

The visa exemption period for citizens of Montenegro is 90 days for a period of 180 days, which means that the travel document must be valid for at least 150 days counting from the date of entry into the Republic of Turkey.

DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

The Republic of Turkey recognized the independence of Montenegro on 12 June 2006. Montenegro and the Republic of Turkey established diplomatic relations on 3 July 2006.

Periša Kastratović is Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Montenegro to the Republic of Turkey, resident in Ankara (assumed office on 25 October 2019).

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Turkey to Montenegro, resident in Podgorica, is Songul Ozan (assumed office on 8 February 2019).

On 21 March 2019, the Government of Montenegro passed the Decision on the opening of the Consulate General in Istanbul, which formally began operating at the end of 2019.

On 23 December 2020, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey issued an Exequatur to Mehmet Akkan Suver in capacity of Honorary Consul of Montenegro in Balikesir. The Honorary Consulate began operating on 24 February 2021.

The Honorary Consulate of Montenegro for the Antalya region with its seat in Muratpaşa, headed by Honorary Consul Hussein Erkan Yilmaz was opened on 19 November 2020.

The Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Turkey in Bijelo Polje, headed by Sahret Hajdarpašić, has been operating since 10 September 2019.

OFFICIAL VISITS

On 10 February  2020, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey Mevlüt Cavuşoğlu paid an official visit to Podgorica and met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović, President of Montenegro Milo Đukanović, Prime Minister Duško Marković and Parliament Speaker Ivan Brajović.

On 10 September 2019, Minister of Foreign Affairs Srdjan Darmanovic paid an official visit to the Republic of Turkey and met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey Mevlüt Cavuşoğlu, Parliament Speaker Mustafa Şentop and Deputy President Fuat Oktay.

The Montenegrin delegation at the inauguration ceremony of the President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, which was held on 9 July 2018. was led by Deputy Prime Minister and Co-Chair of the Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation Mr. Milutin Simović.

On 9 May 2017, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey Mevlüt Cavuşoğlu paid an official visit to Montenegro and met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović, President of Montenegro Filip Vujanović, Parliament Speaker Ivan Brajović, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Milutin Simović.

ECONOMIC COOPERATION

The total amount of trade exchange from January to December 2020 was 121.909.770 million EUR.

Turkey is 10th largest investor in 2019 in Montenegro, with investments of 25.9 million EUR.

During 2020, 12.404 tourists from Turkey visited Montenegro in individual and collective accommodation (56,042 overnight stays).
