Costa Rica*

Holders of travel documents with a valid Schengen visa, a valid visa from the United States, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, or the Republic of Ireland, as well as residence permits from those countries, may enter and stay in, or transit through, the territory of Montenegro for up to 30 days, but no longer than the expiration of their visa if the validity period is shorter than 30 days.

Visa regime

Nationals of Costa Rica may enter, pass through the territory of and stay in Montenegro up to 90 days, with a valid travel document, without a visa.

Diplomatic relations

The Republic of Costa Rica officially recognized Montenegro on 24 May 2007, when diplomatic relations were established.

On 26  October 2018, Permanent Representative of Montenegro to the UN in New York, Ambassador Milica Pejanović Đurišić, was given an agreement for the position of non-resident Ambassador of Montenegro to the Republic of Costa Rica, based in New York.

On May 14, 2008, Ana Teresa Dengo Benavides handed over her credentials and became the first Ambassador of the Republic of Costa Rica to Montenegro, on a non-resident basis, based in Vienna. After the expiration of her mandate, Costa Rica did not appoint a new ambassador.

Official visits

On 23 April 2004, after visiting New York and participating on the Conference on Sustainable Development of Montenegro, organized by UNDP and the Rockefeller Brothers Foundation, Prime Minister Milo Đukanović visited the Republic of Costa Rica, where he met with Costa Rican President Abel Pasek de la Espriel.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Costa Rica, Bruno Stanio Ugarte, visited Montenegro on 24 May 2007 and met with Prime Minister Željko Šturanović, Parliament Speaker Ranko Krivokapić and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Montenegro Milan Roćen.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Montenegro, Milan Roćen, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Costa Rica, Bruno Stan Ugarte, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September 2007 in New York.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Montenegro, Nebojsa Kaludjerovic, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Religions of the Republic of Costa Rica, Enrique Castillo Barantes, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September 2012 in New York.
