Diplomatic Relations

The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia officially recognized Montenegro on the 10th of June 2011, and the diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on the same day.

H.E. Milorad Šćepanović has been, so far, the only (non-residential) Ambassador of Montenegro to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. He occupied this post from July 2015, until June 2017 - when it was abolished by the new Internal Organization Act of MFA Montenegro.

At it's session of the 23rd of July 2014, the Government of Montenegro made decision to open the Embassy to the African Union in Addis Ababa, with the purpose of establishing and further developing relations with the African countries, as well as broadening the scope of Montenegro's foreign policy strategy - not omitting Africa. The planned Mission of Montenegro to African Union had been intended to serve as the diplomatic mission to Ethiopia (as well as to several other African countries). This initiative, however, was later abolished.

Political Contacts

The only meeting between the statesmen of Montenegro and Ethiopia that took place, was in September of 2015, when the two now former Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Igor Lukšić and Tedros Adhan Ghebrejesus, met at the margins of the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly.
