Diplomatic Relations Overview

Montenegro and the Republic of Indonesia traditionally develop their relations in the spirit of friendship.

The Republic of Indonesia officially recognized Montenegro on the 24th of July 2006, and the diplomatic relations were established on the 21st of September 2011.

On the 13th of May 2019, Mochamad Chandra Widya Yudhi, the non-residential Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Montenegro (with the residence in Belgrade), presented his credentials to the President of Montenegro Milo Đukanović.

Until the appointment of the new Ambassador of Montenegro to Indonesia (on a non-residential basis, from Beijing), Damir Šabanović, First Secretary in the Embassy of Montenegro to the PRC, performs the duty of Chargé d'affaires, a.i.

Political Contacts

No official high-level bilateral visits have, so far, been realized. However, several meetings between Montenegro's and Indonesia's officials did occur.

On the 22nd of September 2017, Montenegrin MFA, Prof. Dr. Srđan Darmanović, had a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Mrs. Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi, in New York, at the margins of the 72nd Session of the UN’s General Assembly. On that occasion, two bilateral documents were signed: the Agreement on Abolition of Visas for Holders of Diplomatic and Official Passports, as well as the Memorandum on Bilateral Political Consultations.

The first Bialteral Political Consultations between the MFA of Montenegro and the MFA of Indonesia took place on the 19th and 20th of March 2018 in Podgorica. It is considered that these consultations gave a new impulse to the overall strengthening of the relations between Montenegro and Indonesia, notably in the political, economical, and sociocultural contexts. During the sojourn of the Indonesian delegation in Podgorica, a visit was organized to the Municipality of Nikšić (and to the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center “Tehnopolis” in Nikšić). Also, a business forum was held in Budva, on the topic of strengthening of the Montenegrin-Indonesian relations – with the purpose of better linkage and better identification of potential areas for the cooperation between the two states. Indonesian side conveyed the invitation that the next Bilateral Political Consultations be held in Bali.
