DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS 

Montenegro and the Kingdom of Belgium have traditionally good relations that were established during the Principality of Montenegro. The Kingdom of Belgium has had a consular office in Cetinje since 1910, and the first honorary vice-consul was Vuko Vuletić. The first honorary consul of Montenegro in Belgium, in the period from 1906 to 1919, was Otto Frank. Today, Belgium strongly supports and makes an important contribution to the achievement of Montenegro's foreign policy goals.

The Kingdom of Belgium recognized the independence of Montenegro on 23 June, 2006. Diplomatic relations were established on July 25, 2006.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Montenegro to the Kingdom of Belgium, resident in Brussels, is Ivan Leković (assumed duty on June 26, 2020).

Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium, on a non-resident basis, stationed in Belgrade, Konrad Adam, assumed this duty on November 19, 2018, by presenting his credentials to the President of Montenegro, Milo Đukanović. 

BILATERAL HIGH LEVEL MEETINGS 

Prime Minister of Montenegro, Prof Zdravko Krivokapić, PhD, paid an official visit to the EU and NATO institutions in Brussels, and on that occasion he also met with the President of the House of Representatives of Belgium, Elian Tilije, on December 16, 2020.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof Srđan Darmanović, PhD, paid an official visit to the Kingdom of Belgium, on April 25, 2017.

Speaker of the Parliament of Montenegro, Ivan Brajović, was in Brussels where he attended the session of the Belgian Parliament at which the Protocol on Montenegro's accession to NATO was ratified on December 15, 2016.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium Didier Reynders paid an official visit to Montenegro on February 16, 2015.

ECONOMIC COOPERATION

In 2020, total commodity exchange with Belgium amounted to EUR 17,9 million out of which EUR 17, 575, 000 worth of imports, and EUR 402 thousand worth of exports. In 2019, total commodity exchange with Belgium amounted to EUR 18, 188, 000 out of which EUR 17,434,000 worth of imports, and EUR 754,000 worth of exports.

In 2020, direct investments from Belgium to Montenegro amounted to EUR 3.2 million. In 2019, direct investments from Belgium amount to EUR 5.35 million. In 2018, direct investments from Belgium amount to EUR 17.44 million.

In 2020, there were 2 271 tourists from Belgium who visited Montenegro, and this resulted in a total of 3,525 overnight stays. In 2019, there were 22,207 tourists from Belgium who visited Montenegro (who realized 67,862 overnight stays.
