Honorary Consul of the Swiss Confederation
Traditionally friendly relations between the two countries are equally important, both for Montenegro and for Switzerland itself. Significant part of the population living and working in that country are immigrants from the former Yugoslavia, and among them is a significant number of Montenegrin emigrants (about 22,000).
Diplomatic relations
Switzerland officially recognized Montenegro on June 9, 2006. Diplomatic relations were established on July 5, 2006.
Currently, the Embassy of Montenegro is at the level of charge d'affaires until the appointment of a new ambassador.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Swiss Confederation to Montenegro, based in Belgrade, is Urs Schmid (assumed this duty on February 2, 2021).
The Honorary Consul of Switzerland in Montenegro is Vladimir Radonjić, since December 29, 2014.
Honorary Consul of Montenegro in Switzerland is Rene Stammbach, since August 14, 2014.
High-level bilateral meetings
Deputy Prime Minister Zoran Pažin participated in the Geneva High-Level Meeting of the Strategic Dialogue for the Western Balkans of the World Economic Forum, 7-9. November 2019.
The President of Montenegro Milo Đukanović visited Geneva on the occasion of his participation in the Investment Summit of Global Leaders on the topic "Investing in the New Era of Globalization", that was held within the UNCTAD World Investment Forum, 22-24. October 2018.
The President of the Parliament of Montenegro, Ivan Brajović, paid an official visit to Switzerland on March 27, 2018.
Economic indicators
Trade in 2020 between Montenegro and Switzerland amounted to 47,97 million euros (exports were 7,84 million euros and imports 47,87 million euros). In 2019, trade amounted to 46,22 million euros (exports were 8 million euros and imports 38,22 million euros), while in 2018 trade amounted to 42,77 million euros (exports 7,06 million euros, and imports 35.21 million euros).
Foreign direct investments in 2020 amounted to 63,22 million euros, in 2019 amounted to 43,7 million euros, while in 2018, direct investments from Switzerland amounted to 39,66 million euros. In 2020, Switzerland was among the three largest investors in Montenegro.
In 2020, 841 tourists from Switzerland (including Liechtenstein) visited Montenegro, with 2.805 overnight stays. In 2019, there were 25.614 tourists from Switzerland (including Liechtenstein), with 107.747 overnight stays. In 2018, there were 16.686 tourists from Switzerland (including Liechtenstein), with 71.821 overnight stays.
