DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

The Portuguese Republic recognized Montenegro on 19 June 2006. Diplomatic relations were established on 17 May 2007. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Montenegro to the Republic of Portugal, on a non-resident basis based in Paris, is Ambassador Ivan Ivanišević. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Portugal to Montenegro, on a non - resident basis representing Spain from Belgrade, is Maria Virgínia Mendes da Silva Pina.

OFFICIAL VISITS

There have been no official incoming / outgoing visits by the three presidents (Parliament/State/Government) since the restoration of Montenegrin independence, and no visits by foreign ministers since 2007/2008.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro, Milan Roćen, paid an official visit to Portugal on February 20, 2008.

Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado visited Montenegro as EU President on 23 August 2007.

ECONOMIC INDICATORS

During 2020, total trade amounted to 2.67 million euros (imports 2.67 million; exports 0.002 million). In 2019, imports from Portugal amounted to 5.22 million euros, while exports were only 14,000 euros. During 2018, imports from Portugal amounted to EUR 4.16 million, while exports were insignificant (EUR 6,000). In 2017, imports from Portugal amounted to 3.74 million euros, while exports were only 1,000 euros. The most represented products in imports are clothing and footwear, rubber and godfather products, ceramic products and furniture.

In 2020, 0.31 million euros of foreign direct investment from Portugal was recorded.

In 2019, Montenegro was visited by 813 Portuguese tourists, who spent 2,974 nights. During 2018, Montenegro was visited by 2,944 tourists from Portugal, who spent 8,877 nights, while in 2017, Montenegro was visited by 2,071 Portuguese tourists, who spent 6,949 nights.
