Abazović's call with Escobar: We will monitor the situation with Russian oligarchs, ready to expand sanctions
Deputy Prime Minister Dritan Abazović spoke today with the US Deputy Assistant Secretary and Special Representative to the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar. The two officials discussed developments in Ukraine and possible future activities for sanctioning Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
Abazović and Escobar agreed that it is currently crucial for the countries of the Western Balkans to show great determination in defending civilisational values and to stand united with NATO and EU.
Montenegro is ready to expand sanctions in order to fully pursue EU foreign policy. We will monitor the situation with the Russian oligarchs and take all measures in accordance with the law if they come to Montenegro. In order to preserve stability and security of the country, we are carrying out activities aimed at combating malignant influence in Montenegro, which previously resulted in the expulsion of a Russian diplomat by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition to humanitarian and financial aid, we will also provide aid in military equipment, as soon as the internal procedures in Montenegro are completed, Abazović said.
The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that Montenegro strives to be an example of stability and a clear European and Euro-Atlantic policy in the Western Balkans, promoting the ideas of peace, dialogue and coexistence. It's during these times that we see which countries truly cherish the values of peace, democracy and the European way of life, he said.
The Prime Minister-designate said that the new government, if formed, will make decisions that will provide stronger support to the allies to stop Russian aggression.
Mr. Escobar thanked Montenegro for the partnership and said it could count on US full support.
US Ambassador Judy Rising Reinke was also present during the call.
