Bečić and Šaranović discuss Montenegro's path with EC Vice-President Schinas
Deputy Prime Minister for Security, Internal Policy, European and Foreign Affairs Aleksa Bečić and Minister of the Interior Danilo Šaranović met with Vice-President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas in Brussels.
Highlighting the achievements of the new government and analyzing the progress made in meeting the interim benchmarks for Chapters 23 and 14, Bečić stated that all capacities have been directed towards obtaining IBAR by June of this year. The focus is set on obtaining IBAR and subsequently accelerating the closing of chapters. The goal is for Montenegro to become the 28th member of the European Union by 2028, which is beneficial for its citizens, motivating for all candidate countries, and sends a strong strategic message from the EU itself. He further noted that in the previous five-month period, pressing issues unresolved for years have been addressed, leading to the restoration of functionality in key institutions.
Minister Šaranović emphasised that Montenegro can be proud of its achievements, noting that it is the first and only country to have ratified all agreements of the Berlin Process. He highlighted impressive results in the fight against organised crime and corruption, attributed to excellent cooperation among the security sector, Special State Prosecutor's Office, and EUROPOL. Minister Šaranović underscored their firm commitment to cleansing institutions of any form of organised crime and corruption, evidenced by numerous prosecutions and arrests of officials.
Vice-President Schinas acknowledged that the role of Montenegrin officials is pivotal considering the duties they have assumed. He stressed the importance of progress, expressing particular satisfaction in seeing them not only as a young generation of leaders but as a generation of reformers who wholeheartedly believe in their endeavors. Schinas highlighted that the momentum indicates that the individuals in positions are genuine, the policy is genuine, and the most crucial aspect, demonstrated at every turn, is their unwavering commitment to work.
