Construction begins on naval vessels bearing names of Montenegro’s legendary rulers: “Petar I Njegoš” and “Petar II Njegoš”

At the KERSHIP shipyard in France, construction has officially begun on new patrol vessels for the needs of the Montenegrin Navy.

This milestone marks the building of a new pillar of national security, a cornerstone of our defence policy, and a significant step forward in the modernization of our armed forces. These ships stand as a message that Montenegro will no longer be a weak link on the Adriatic, but rather a reliable pillar of peace, security, and alliance.

The new patrol vessels are designed to perform a wide range of missions: from surveillance of territorial waters and combating smuggling and illegal migration, to participating in international NATO missions.

Each of these missions reflects our strategic maturity and our understanding that freedom is not inherited—it must be safeguarded.

It is with particular respect and pride that we announce the new vessels will bear the names “Petar I Njegoš” and “Petar II Njegoš.” This decision reflects the fact that Montenegro’s security is deeply rooted in the honor, history, and spiritual legacy established by the greatest among us. Even the most advanced equipment does not abandon its roots—it carries them forward through time, from the Montenegrin cap to the Montenegrin flag flying on the deck.

This project marks the beginning of a new era for the Montenegrin Navy—an era in which we are not dependent on others, but contribute meaningfully to our community of allies. An era in which we protect not only our seas and our history, but also our word. And an era in which we understand that peace does not come by itself—it must be built, defended, and earned.
