Deputy Prime Minister Bečić meets with Ambassador of the Netherlands Martijn Elgersma
Deputy Prime Minister Aleksa Bečić met with Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Martijn Elgersma.
Ambassador Elgersma emphasized the Netherlands' readiness to further strengthen bilateral relations with Montenegro, underscoring that the country’s progress toward EU membership remains a cornerstone of their partnership.
The positive European Commission report confirms the significant progress Montenegro’s Government has made on its EU path, but it also brings greater challenges and responsibilities. The greatest value of NATO and the European Union lies in the principle of solidarity, as we all face similar challenges. The Netherlands continues to monitor developments in Montenegro closely and remains committed to supporting its European journey, offering any necessary assistance to achieve this strategic objective, stated Ambassador Elgersma.
Deputy Prime Minister Bečić expressed gratitude for the Netherlands' readiness to deepen cooperation and provide assistance in accelerating Montenegro's path toward EU membership.
The priorities of this Government have been clear from day one and have been reaffirmed by concrete results. We are pleased that this progress is recognized not only by leading European officials but also in the European Commission’s annual reports. Accelerating Montenegro’s EU accession, strengthening the socio-economic well-being of our citizens, and decisively combating crime and corruption are the main pillars of our work. The exceptional results achieved in these areas demonstrate our dedication to the future and to issues that unite Montenegro, said Bečić.
He added that Montenegro’s secure future and resilience lie in strong institutions free from undue influence, empowered citizens, and reliable partnerships with Europe and NATO.
Montenegro now has a historic opportunity to become the EU’s 28th member by 2028, a realistic goal that we must seize. This is a goal that transcends daily politics and individual interests. I have always been an advocate of a moderate approach, mutual respect, solidarity, empathy, and building bridges. The future requires us to unite all sectors of society that support a Montenegro governed by the rule of law, with strong institutions, empowered citizens, and a commitment to European values and a European future, Bečić concluded.
