Freedom of the press is one of the foundations of modern democratic societies

Together with all stakeholders, the media community and partners from the civil sector, we will work to create an environment for the full realisation of the right to freedom of expression and freedom of the press in Montenegro, the Ministry of Culture and Media said on the occasion of 3 May, World Press Freedom Day.

Freedom of the press is one of the foundations of modern democratic societies, whose continuous progress is possible only when citizens have access to reliable information and can make informed decisions, the Ministry of Culture and Media said in a statement.

While the times we live in are unfortunately full of fake news and misinformation, and attacks against journalists are increasing, independent and free media coverage is more important than ever.

The Ministry of Culture and Media expresses its full readiness to work together with all stakeholders, the media community and partners from the civil sector to create an environment for the full realisation of the right to freedom of expression and freedom of the press in Montenegro, and to continue all good practices and overcome the limitations of the earlier period, said Minister Maša Vlaović.

We are particularly concerned about unresolved cases and the increasing number of attacks against journalists and media assets. Therefore, we appeal to all actors in this important process to take a proactive approach in investigating these cases.

We will work with full respect for independence and editorial policies, affirm self-regulation and monitor the conditions in which media workers work, continue activities to change key media laws, in order to help build a healthy, sustainable and strong media scene that is resistant to any kind of pressure and free to work in a professional and ethical manner with respect for the law, the principles of the profession and the highest international standards in the field of media, said the Minister.
