Ibrahimović meets UNDP Resident Representative for Montenegro
Montenegro is committed to following the European and global trend that recognises the importance of clean energy and the environment as one of the most important resources. Recognising the obligations that Montenegro has as a signatory to the Paris Agreement and a candidate country for membership in the European Union, our strategic commitment is to base economic development on the principles of decarbonisation and green energy transition. In this way, we want to contribute to the success of the global fight against the negative effects of climate change, said Deputy Prime Minister for Regional Development and Minister of Capital Investments Ervin Ibrahimović during a meeting with UNDP Resident Representative for Montenegro Daniela Gašparíková.
The meeting discussed the project "Enabling Paradigm Shift Towards Low-carbon Transport in Montenegro", which is being prepared by the Ministry of Capital Investments in cooperation with UNDP. DPM Ibrahimović referred to the need to educate the public and raise the awareness of society as a whole when we talk about the next steps that await us in the process of transport decarbonisation.
UNDP Resident Representative Daniela Gašparíková expressed satisfaction with the excellent cooperation with the Ministry of Capital Investments and spoke with DPM Ibrahimović about further steps towards efficient project implementation.
The officials emphasised the importance of the project, which aims to reduce the share of road traffic in total national greenhouse gas emissions, which will be achieved by creating a sustainable, inclusive transport system while achieving a balanced representation of public and passenger motor vehicle transport and wider use of electric and hybrid vehicles. The first important step towards the transport decarbonisation is the adoption of the "Roadmap to decarbonising transport and improving mobility" by the end of June this year.
Gašparíková also informed the Deputy Prime Minister about a project implemented by UNDP in cooperation with the Municipality of Pljevlja to subsidize energy efficiency measures and reduce air pollution. Furthermore, long-term cooperation with the Investment and Development Fund, as well as the Eco Fund on programmes to encourage energy efficiency and alternative energy sources focused on citizens and the economy will encourage the acceleration of low-carbon development in Montenegro.
Both sides agreed that Montenegro can tackle the challenges, it will not be easy or simple, and citizens and businesses should be key partners, which will ultimately affect the quality of life of society as a whole.
