Montenegro admitted to Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA)
Minister of Capital Investments Mladen Bojanić participated in the online Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) Summit, during which Montenegro was admitted as full member. The PPCA is a coalition of national and sub-national governments, businesses, and organisations committed to the green energy transition, i.e. the transition of energy production from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.
Minister Bojanić thanked the summit participants for admitting Montenegro to this organisation, emphasising the importance of switching to renewable energy sources and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
By accepting the recommendations of the partners from the European Union, the strategic goals and policy of including renewable energy sources in the energy system of Montenegro have been defined.
The main problem in achieving these goals remains TPP Pljevlja, whose installed capacity is 225 MW and annual production is 1,300 GWh, which is about 40% of total electricity production in Montenegro, and in addition is an important socio-economic factor for the entire northern region. Due to all this, the transition to renewable energy sources while maintaining stable socio-economic conditions is a major challenge for the Government of Montenegro and society as a whole.
Nevertheless, it is expected that in the next 15 years, by investing in renewable energy sources and energy reserves, it will provide the necessary level of energy production and stability of the energy system of Montenegro as a whole, while pursuing a stable socio-economic policy.
At the end of the summit, Minister Bojanić expressed Montenegro's commitment to the green transition, expecting that the transition of energy production from fossil fuels to renewable sources will be completed by 2035.
