PM Krivokapić meets with EU Special Representative Miroslav Lajčak
Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapić met with EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue and Western Balkans Miroslav Lajčák. Bearing in mind new geopolitical circumstances there is a tendency to accelerate the region's integration into the European Union, and Montenegro is an ideal candidate to show that integration can be accelerated, the meeting noted.
The officials expressed satisfaction with the fact that the Western Balkans will continue to be high on the EU agenda.
The main goal of Montenegro is to join the European Union, but in order to make progress in this process it is necessary for the country to be stable.
Krivokapić said that the elections are the only democratic way out of this situation considering the blockade of institutions and the current political crisis.
The story about the minority government, as he claims, only further destabilized the country, even intensified the crisis, because the war in Ukraine strengthened nationalism embodied in the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and the Democratic Front (DF).
Any polarization in society is bad and can lead to escalation of conflict.
There are currently four intertwined crises in Montenegro: political, economic, energy and food crisis. In order to resolve the complicated situation and make progress in the accelerated EU integration, the caretaker government couldn't be a way out of the crisis either, since Lex specialis would be necessary for its formation, the Prime Minister explained, adding that the elections are the best and fairest solution.
Montenegro does not have time for political games, the early parliamentary elections should be held at the same time as the local ones, the Prime Minister said.
Lajčák expressed full support for Montenegro, saying that he wants a pro-European Montenegro and that it is entirely up to the country to resolve its crisis, emphasising that elections are the most democratic solution.
The two officials met on the sidelines of the Delphi Economic Forum in Greece.
