Meloni: We want Montenegro to join the EU during Italy’s presidency in 2028

The best days of Montenegro–Italy cooperation are yet to come, and future collaboration within the European Union will further strengthen overall bilateral relations — this was the message from the meeting between Prime Minister of Montenegro Milojko Spajić and President of the Council of Ministers of Italy Giorgia Meloni, who extended the invitation for Prime Minister Spajić's first official visit to Italy.

The meeting focused on joint projects and cooperation in the fields of infrastructure, defence, and energy, as well as enhanced connectivity and Italy’s continued support for Montenegro on its European path.

Meloni emphasized that Montenegro rightfully expects to be the next member of the European Union.

I closely follow your work and am impressed by your vision and the way you are leading Montenegro. I am confident that during Italy’s Presidency of the Council of European Union in the first half of 2028, Montenegro will become the 28th member of the Union, said Meloni.

Prime Minister Spajić expressed Montenegro’s strong reliance on Italy’s support in the field of European integration and foreign policy overall. He stressed that the traditionally strong bilateral ties can be further deepened, particularly in the energy sector. In that context, he highlighted the importance of continuing the submarine electricity cable project, specifically the laying of a second cable, which will further connect Montenegro not only with Italy but also with the European Union.

Energy is a key development opportunity for Montenegro. That is why it is especially important that we implement major infrastructure projects in this area in cooperation with trusted partners, so that we can jointly realize this potential to our mutual benefit, Spajić stated.

Meloni expressed full support for the continuation of this project.

During the meeting, the two sides also discussed cooperation with partners outside of Europe, with particular emphasis on relations with the United States and the United Arab Emirates, with whom both countries have signed bilateral agreements.

Prime Minister Meloni particularly emphasized the importance of cooperation with "reliable partners from the UAE," noting that the new era demands credible partnerships.

During the meeting, it was assessed that good maritime connectivity during the summer season and a direct air route provide a solid foundation for stronger economic exchange. However, both sides agreed that further efforts are needed to intensify activities and increase the frequency of business contacts in this area.

They agreed to organize a Business Forum focusing on energy, transport infrastructure and defence, which will be followed by the signing of a bilateral agreement in areas of mutual interest.
