Spajić, Tajani: 2028 is the perfect time for Montenegro’s EU accession, Italy to provide full support
Italy will be a strong advocate for the European Union's enlargement and provide full support to Montenegro on its integration path, while also serving as an economic partner. This was emphasised during the meeting between Prime Minister Milojko Spajić and Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani.
The two countries have historically strong bilateral relations, but Italy will provide even stronger support at this crucial moment for Montenegro's EU accession.
The message is very clear. For Italy, the accession of Western Balkan countries to the EU is a political priority, and we are ready to give full support to your European integration. We believe that Montenegro can join the EU by 2028, which is an ideal timeline. We will promote the idea of enlargement and assist in every possible way, emphasised Deputy Prime Minister Tajani.
Prime Minister Spajić highlighted that due to historical ties and cultural similarities, Italy—set to hold the EU presidency in the first half of 2028—remains one of Montenegro’s key partners.
In addition to support for integration, strengthening administrative capacities, and combating crime and corruption (with cooperation already initiated with the Guardia di Finanza), the meeting emphasised the potential to enhance economic ties.
We seek much stronger economic cooperation, and I believe there is ample opportunity to enhance it. The energy link established through the undersea cable provides an excellent foundation for collaboration in this field. There is also great potential for joint ventures in major infrastructure projects currently being developed in Montenegro. Other areas for cooperation include tourism and agriculture, where the experience and expertise of Italian small and medium-sized enterprises can significantly contribute to the development of our companies, stated the Prime Minister of Montenegro.
The meeting highlighted the importance of political stability and predictability as key factors for attracting large companies.
In the context of strengthening economic ties, it was agreed to organise a business forum and arrange a study visit to Montenegro by representatives of Italian companies.
The meeting at Villa Gorica was attended by Montenegro's Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović, Montenegro’s Ambassador to Rome Milena Šofranac Ljubojević, and Italy's Ambassador to Montenegro Andreina Marsella.
