The primary goal of Montenegro’s foreign policy is EU membership, and I believe that all political and societal actors in Montenegro have contributed to the achievements of the past ten months. We are confident that we will fulfill our plan within the next two and a half to three years and become the next EU member state, said Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović.

In an interview with TRT World, DPM Ivanović discussed Montenegro’s European path and emphasized that the country has absolutely earned its position as a leader in European integration. He added that, based on what we have heard from the European Commission and member states, continuing with the current pace of work, Montenegro’s membership by 2028 is achievable.

He particularly highlighted the synergy between the Government and Parliament of Montenegro, recalling that key appointments in the judiciary and various laws related to Chapters 23 and 24 were unanimously adopted by Parliament.

Different political parties have different perspectives, but what unites them, including both the majority and opposition, is Montenegro’s European perspective. I believe that everyone has made a strong contribution in this context, said Ivanović.

The enlargement policy is one of the best policies of the European Union, and a secure and prosperous Europe can only be achieved by uniting the continent through EU membership, emphasized Ivanović. He added that Montenegro supports all countries wishing to join the EU, advocating for a merit-based approach, particularly in light of the results Montenegro has achieved in the past ten months.

In response to a journalist’s question, DPM Ivanović stated that Montenegro aims to develop good relations with all countries that share the same values, stressing the importance of cooperation with Western Balkan countries, as well as with EU and NATO members. Montenegro is fully aligned with the EU's foreign policy, said Ivanović, noting that the country has adopted several packages of sanctions against Russia and is interested in maintaining friendly relations with China, while also considering the EU's stance on this matter.
