Montenegrin citizenship is lost upon the request of a Montenegrin citizen – renunciation.

Renunciation of Montenegrin citizenship can be granted to an individual who has submitted a request for renunciation and fulfills the following conditions: they must be at least 18 years old, have another citizenship or proof that they will be admitted to the citizenship of another state, and are genuinely residing in the territory of another state (articles 19-23 of the Law), by law or international agreements and treaties.
