Strong UN support for Montenegro's European integration

Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović met today with Diego Zorrilla, the new acting UN Resident Coordinator in Montenegro.

Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović congratulated Mr. Zorrilla on his new role and wished him success in his duties.

He emphasised Montenegro's commitment to working with the United Nations and highlighted the importance of the UN Office’s support, which, through a coordinated framework of cooperation with the Government, assists Montenegro in implementing reforms necessary for EU accession.

The support provided by the UN Office is crucial for achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs), as these goals align closely with the standards for EU membership. Meeting these goals will advance Montenegro's progress on its European path, Ivanović noted.

Ivanović reiterated that Montenegro aims to become a full EU member by 2028, which will require strengthening administrative capacities. He also emphasised the importance of continued UN support in areas such as democratization, rule of law, and social inclusion. Additionally, Ivanović mentioned Montenegro's candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2026-2027 term, expressing confidence in the UN Office's support to promote and enhance Montenegro's visibility and role on the global stage.

Diego Zorrilla, UN Resident Coordinator in Montenegro, agreed that the cooperation between the United Nations and the Government of Montenegro is closely aligned with the EU accession process. He reaffirmed the UN team's commitment to providing expertise in specific chapters of the accession negotiations.

Zorrilla particularly highlighted the significance of the Montenegro SDG Acceleration Fund, which aims to consolidate donor funds and channel them toward sustainable development initiatives, with a special focus on vulnerable groups.

He assured Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović that the United Nations team in Montenegro remains open to further collaboration and continued support in elevating Montenegro's international standing.
