Summit of the Future

Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović attended the opening of the United Nations "Summit of the Future" on 22 September 2024. The "Summit of the Future" serves as a prelude to this year's General Debate of the UN General Assembly and will last for two days, on 22 and 23 September 2024.

On the first day of the summit, UN member states unanimously adopted the "Pact for the Future" document, following months of negotiations aimed at addressing common global challenges.

High-ranking officials from all UN member states will speak at the summit. Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović will deliver his address on 23 September 2024 and will also participate in the interactive dialogue, "The Future Starts Now," organised as part of the summit.

On the sidelines of the General Debate in New York, Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović met with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset on 22 September 2024.

During the meeting, the importance of the continued work of the Council of Europe, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, was highlighted. The dedication of Montenegro to promoting the values on which the Council of Europe is founded was emphasised, along with the significance of the expertise the organisation provides to Montenegro.

Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović reminded Secretary General Berset that Montenegro will chair the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe from November 2026 to May 2027 and has already begun preparations. Through this chairmanship, Montenegro will further demonstrate its commitment to the Council’s values and work to strengthen multilateralism, one of Montenegro’s foreign policy priorities.

On 22 September 2024, Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla in New York.

During the talks, Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović highlighted the stable decades-long relations between the two countries and expressed readiness to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

He also informed Minister Parrilla about Montenegro’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2026-2027 period and provided an update on Montenegro’s progress in its EU accession process.

Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović meets with Jordanian Foreign Minister

As part of his visit and participation in the UN General Debate, Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović met with Ayman Safadi, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, on 22 September 2024.

Both sides expressed readiness to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the two countries. Given the traditionally strong and friendly relations, they discussed opportunities to deepen cooperation in tourism, economy, and culture.

Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović also presented Montenegro’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2026-2027 and provided updates on Montenegro’s EU accession progress.

Minister Safadi reiterated Jordan’s interest in enhancing relations with Montenegro and invited Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović for an official visit to Jordan in the near future.

Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović also had brief discussions with the President of North Macedonia, the Prime Minister of Iceland, and the Foreign Ministers of Latvia, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Greece, Romania, and Bahrain.
