Hungary to continue advocating for Montenegro's swift EU accession
Montenegro and Hungary affirm their dedication to strengthening friendly and allied relations, fostering intense political dialogue within NATO and on a bilateral level. During a meeting with his Hungarian counterpart, Péter Szijjártó, Montenegro's Minister of Foreign Affairs Filip Ivanović expressed gratitude for Hungary's active role in promoting enlargement policies, advocating for Montenegro, and supporting the country in fulfilling EU agenda criteria.
The discussions focused on the European integration process, emphasising Hungary's active role in promoting enlargement policies and advocating for Montenegro's swift accession to the European Union. Minister Ivanović appreciated Hungary's commitment to prioritizing enlargement and accelerating accession negotiations during its upcoming EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2024.
Minister Szijjártó highlighted Hungary's commitment to supporting Montenegro, the most advanced candidate on the European path, in achieving full EU membership. He conveyed that there is a possibility for Montenegro to become the next EU member, and Hungary, during its EU Council Presidency, will work to accelerate the negotiation process. Szijjártó emphasised that all EU member states should sincerely support the enlargement process.
The ministers noted the positive collaboration between Montenegro and Hungary within NATO, contributing to the realization of NATO's agenda. They expressed satisfaction with the quality of bilateral cooperation, particularly in economics, education, and culture.
During the visit, both ministers signed a cooperation programme in the field of culture until 2026. The programme aims to enhance cultural ties between Montenegro and Hungary.
Minister Ivanović also met with representatives of the Hungary-Montenegro Friendship Group in the Hungarian Parliament, highlighting the importance of parliamentary cooperation and Hungary's continuous support for Montenegro's foreign policy priorities. They assured that the Hungarian Parliament would be among the first to ratify the agreement on Montenegro's full EU membership.
In Budapest, Minister Ivanović addressed young Hungarian diplomats at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, discussing current developments in Montenegro's foreign policy priorities.
